In the past decade, there has been significant growth in the illicit trafficking of drugs throughout the United States.  The Houston area continues to be threatened due to the close proximity to the U.S.- Mexico border.  Even with the strong law enforcement presence devoted to combating this threat, the quantity of drugs being transported through the region remains staggering.

Due to the growth of drug abuse nationally and as a preventative measure, the HIDTA has created this website, StopDrugs Jefferson County to educate the public about dangerous drug  activity and provide a way or residents to report tips to  provide leads for law enforcement.  This community policing initiative has been designed to help keep our neighborhoods and families safe from illegal drugs and related criminal activity.

Counterfeit "Oxys" Containing Dangerous Fentanyl

Police in Gulfport Mississippi have issued a warning to the public (May 7, 2018) about counterfeit Oxycodone tablets that look like regular “oxys” but are actually made of the dangerous synthetic opioid fentanyl. Analysis in a DEA lab revealed the pills contained no oxycodone at all.  Pills containing fentanyl carry a high risk of overdose and death, especially if users are unaware of their actual content and are likely to take too many.

Influx of Fentanyl-laced Counterfeit Pills

On October 26, 2015, CDC issued HAN 384 (http://emergency.cdc.gov/han/han00384.asp) that alerted (1) public health departments, health care professionals, first responders, and medical examiners and coroners of the increase in fentanyl-related unintentional overdose fatalities in multiple states primarily driven by illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF) (i.e., non-pharmaceutical fentanyl); (2) provided recommendations for improving detection of fentanyl-related overdose outbreaks; and (3) encouraged states to expand access to naloxone and training for administering naloxone to reduce opioid overdose deaths.
